Lots of gray and overcast days the week of April 2nd, but this was the week\u00a0we officially pivoted to spring and lost the last of the ice.<\/p>\n

Despite a snow storm late in the week we had temperatures consistently above freezing. This was one of the more\u00a0interesting weeks so far because things changed every day. \u00a0As a result, I ended up posting more pictures than usual.<\/p>\n

April 2nd – with the temperatures well above freezing, the ice is\u00a0fighting a losing battle. \u00a0Pictures taken at my normal spot at\u00a018th street looking towards Collingwood.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In the early part of the week, the ice berms were still hanging in there but spaces had\u00a0opened between them. \u00a0As they melt, the ratio of sand to ice increases and they get more and more “dirty” looking. \u00a0They are clearly sitting on the bottom of the lake because they don’t move despite the wind. \u00a0Ice continues to come and go depending on the wind. North of us there continues to be a lot of ice no doubt.<\/p>\n

April 3rd – the ice is still hanging on, but a little less every day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Heavy equipment was out most days this week. \u00a0You can see below a front-end loader clearing the sand that blew up against the breakwater. \u00a0The sheets of plywood that protect the lawns from the worst of the blowing sand are still in place as are the plywood barriers that protect stairs from each property down to the beach. \u00a0I’m kind of curious who funds this clean-up – whether it is the provincial park or the residents. \u00a0Not that I mind either way. \u00a0It’s obviously a big job and expense to clean up after the winter. \u00a0They simply spread the sand still mixed with snow in places across the beach as you can see in the foreground.<\/p>\n

April 3rd – heavy equipment is cleaning up the sand that has collected against the retaining walls<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Being on the water is\u00a0really hard on properties. \u00a0Most homes have shudders or barricade windows with plywood. \u00a0Even on the “lee” side of a\u00a0structure, you can see where the northwest wind can create an eddy effect that results\u00a0in sand piling up against an unprotected south facing window.<\/p>\n

I admire people who manage to have green grass so close to\u00a0the beach. \u00a0While water here is dirt cheap, with all the blowing sand, it is definitely a battle.<\/p>\n

April 4th – I walk by this cabin every day at the 18th street beach entrance. The sand dune covering this window has been getting higher every day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

With consistent warm weather, the ice is on its last legs. \u00a0We’re just one windy day away from losing the last of the ice!<\/p>\n

April 4th – the ice is hanging on by a thread – looking very fragile!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

This is the strangest thing below. \u00a0I have no idea where these ice chunks came from, but I suspect the wind must have blown then in overnight. \u00a0These large “snowballs” were spread the entire length of the beach on April 5th.<\/p>\n

April 5th – I have no idea what happened overnight, but suddenly the beach was covered with these “dinosaur eggs”!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

April 5th – I’m not sure of the physics, but I think we’re literally seeing the last of the ice melt. It seems to convert to ice cold fog. You can feel the cold when you walk through it. \u00a0A few\u00a0fellow beach walkers in the distance. \u00a0I’m getting to know most of the regulars.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

So on April 6th we finally got a storm with strong northwest winds. \u00a0I had work commitments and needed to be in Toronto all day April 6th so I missed my walk unfortunately. \u00a0Before you’re too hard on me for breaking my pledge, I go twice some days. :-).<\/p>\n

On April 7th, the winds were still high. \u00a0We got some snow and the beach had changed completely. Pictures below.<\/p>\n

April 7th – We finally got our wind storm along with about 10 centimeters of snow. It wasn’t possible to walk along the beach today because the waves were crashing up all the way to the grass so I walked on Shore Lane instead. I didn’t dress warm enough on the 7th and nearly froze but I made it to Beach one.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

April 7th – the trees on the sand dune just north of our house were covered with snow and ice. \u00a0Cold and miserable but definitely pretty!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

April 8th was clear. \u00a0It took just one windy day to remove the last of the ice. The picture below was taken the morning of Saturday April 8th a clear but cold morning. \u00a0The pictures below show the extent of the change in just 48 hours.<\/p>\n

We had a bit of a north-west wind again, but you can see the difference between a light wind and seriously high winds. \u00a0The beach was completely exposed and easy to walk on April 8th. \u00a0The day before, the same section of beach was almost completely underwater and it wasn’t possible to walk on the beach. \u00a0(I don’t walk on the grassy part of the beach because there are signs all over warning that the grasslands are a fragile ecosystem)<\/p>\n
