This was the week that Trump tried to acquire Greenland, ICE protests in Minneapolis, and Mark Carney’s well-received speech in Davos. It was also just another cold and snowy January week in Wasaga Beach. Towards the end of the week, we saw extreme cold and a major winter storm crossed the southern United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The feature image is a picture of rental cottages near 37 Street along Shore Lane, which I walk past most days when I venture out to the west end of Wasaga Beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunday, January 18th, 2026 – Walking past some lonely-looking picnic tables, walking west along snowmobile trails on Wasaga Beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monday, January 19th, 2026 – Strong southwest winds scoured the beach on Monday afternoon, exposing the sand in places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuesday, January 20th, 2026 – Despite the cold, Tuesday was a gorgeous day to walk on the beach. The frozen sand is much easier to walk on than snowmobile trails, and it was nice to see the sun after so many days of snowfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wednesday, January 21st, 2026 – Every winter, we see the same pattern of berms forming at the edge of the ice as waves crash against the ice and freeze. The good thing about so much cold weather is that it is safe to venture out on the ice during my daily walks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thursday, January 22nd, 2026 – Walking west across Beach Area 5. Approaching Shore Lane, there is a snow bank near the dead-end sign with snow piled up from the snowplow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thursday, January 22nd, 2026 – The wind chill made things very cold, so I ended up walking a shorter distance than usual. This picture was taken looking towards the water at Beach Area 5. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friday, January 23rd, 2026 – Friday was another day of snow squalls, with near-whiteout conditions at times. This picture was taken looking east along Shore Lane, approaching Beach Area 5. It was too difficult to walk out on the beach because of the drifting snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friday, January 23rd, 2026 – To get a little more shelter from the wind, I opted to walk back along Linda’s Lane (another block south of the water). This is a house I often walk by on the north side of Linda Lane, west of Beach Area 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday, January 24th, 2026 – This was the coldest day of the year so far with temperatures down to -29C. The water beyond the ice berms froze solid overnight as the wind finally dropped. By the time I got down the beach mid-morning it was up to around -18C and it actually felt pleasant without the wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday, January 24th, 2026 – A family was taking advantage of the nice weather to explore out towards the edge of the ice. Despite the cold temperatures, it would be very dangerous to go beyond the berms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
