This is the week the Georgian Bay finally froze over. Satellite photography shows that the bay is entirely ice-covered. Overnight lows dipped into the -20s, but with the bay freezing over, the lake effect snow has slowed considerably.
It was a treat to see the Sun for a change this week. The featured photo was taken hiking along the Beach between Beach areas 5 and 6. The snowmobile trails make it easier, but it is still tiring to walk long distances in the snow. When I went for my walk late-morning on Saturday, it was -18 °C. Unfortunately, I forgot my phone/camera, so I didn’t get any pictures.

Sunday, February 1st, 2026 – Walking through the Oakview Woods (near the RecPlex) on my way to 43rd St North. This is a route I frequently take: I walk down to 57th, turn around, and walk back along the length of the beach.

Monday, February 2nd, 2026 – Looking east along the beach from Beach Area 5.

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2026 – Walking north through the Oakview Woods from Shore Lane. Thankfully there has been lots of traffic packing down a trail after fresh snow.

Wednesday, February 4th, 2026 – A spectacular afternoon walk in the Sun. Heading east along Shore Lane just east of 30th street.

Wednesday, February 4th, 2026 – During a second walk on Wednesday, I exited the beach at 30th street after walking along the snowmobile trails. The setting sun is casting long shadows. This picture was taken looking north towards Georgian Bay with ice berms in the distance. Beyond the berms, the ice is now completely frozen.

Friday, February 6th, 2026 – Looking north towards the Beach from the condos at 30th street.
