The featured picture this week, taken on Sunday, January 25th, shows snow banks along Shore Lane near Beach area 3. The town is running out of places to put the snow!

2026 is shaping up to be one of the colder winters in recent memory. A good indicator is the percentage of ice cover on the Great Lakes. As of January 25th, Lake Huron is 53% ice-covered, compared to an average of 33% between 1972 and 2025. Ice coverage is presently on par with the winter of 2014, one of the coldest in recent memory.

The website glicetracker.github.io provides an interactive interface backed by ice coverage data:

Sunday, January 25th, 2026 – Looking west along Shore Lane near the east end of Beach Area 5.

Monday, January 26th, 2026 – The snowbanks along Shore Lane west of Beach Area 5 are eclipsing the No Parking sign. You need snowshoes to get down to the beach.

Tuesday, January 27th, 2026 – The main entrance to Beach Area 6 is clearly closed!

Wednesday, January 28th, 2026 – The only way to get down to the beach to walk is to follow the snowmobile trails. Looking west from the beach entrance near 30th street.

Wednesday, January 28th, 2026 – This picture was taken from the same place as the one above, but looking towards 30th Street.

Thursday, January 29th, 2026 – By Thursday, the bay was entirely frozen. The dark clouds on the horizon tend to appear on very cold mornings.

Thursday, January 29th, 2026 – This picture was taken near 40th Street, looking towards a trail to the beach. Drifting snow has made it almost impassable. If you look closely, you can see an 8-10 foot snow drift blocking access to the beach formed by blowing snow.

Friday, January 30th, 2026 – The south end of Georgian Bay appears to be frozen solid. I walked down the beach around 11 AM, and the temperature was -15C. I’ll need to check satellite photography to be sure.

Saturday, January 31st, 2026 – Entering Beach 3 at 14th street required climbing over an enormous snow bank along the street at Shore Lane. Wind gusts created some interesting drifts along the beach.
