A beautiful winter week. It was hard to get across the ice with so much fresh snow. I confess – I found myself walking on Shore Lane in places without hard pack snowmobile trails.
Sunday, January 14th, 2018 – I took this picture looking south from the beach near Black Forest Cottages on 12th street. This buried picnic table shows that even though the beach is often swept clear by wind, the snow is deep in places. There are only a few passable foot-paths without finding yourself almost waist-deep in snow.
Sunday, January 14th, 2018 – It was around -12C the morning I took this picture. We had light snow overnight and it was hard to walk on the beach so I walked the whole distance on the snowmobile trails where the snow was packed. It wasn’t too windy and it was awesome to finally see the sun.
Sunday, January 14th, 2018 – Taken looking towards the Bay and Collingwood at Shore Lane and 16th street.
Tuesday, January 16th, 2018 – Tuesday was another nice crisp winter day and enjoyable to walk down the beach. There appears to be a veneer of ice on the bay with large sections of ice floating far off-shore.
Tuesday, January 16th, 2018 – This picture taken near 16th street from the snowmobile trails shows the ice berms freshly covered with new snow extending far out to the bay.
Wednesday, January 17th, 2018 – Another nice sunny day. Taken in the morning from the beach as the sun rises to the southeast.
Wednesday, January 17th, 2018 – Slush and floating ice far out from shore.
Thursday, January 18th, 2018 – A gloomy overcast day late morning on Thursday. Looking towards Blue Mountain from the packed snowmobile trails just west of 13th street at the east end of Shore Lane.
Thursday, January 18th, 2018 – I thought this picture at the beach 2 boardwalk was interesting. The picnic table is actually sitting on top of a second picnic table almost entirely buried in blowing snow up against the boardwalk.
Friday, January 19th, 2018 – Friday the temperatures edged up over freezing. When this happens the snow gets a lot dirtier looking as dark-colored sand embedded in the snow warms up and accelerates the melting process. Taken at the east end of the beach 2 boardwalk.
Friday, January 19th, 2018 – The snow was wet and packed enough to be able to take my shortcut off the beach between 13th and ShoreLane without sinking too far into the snow.
Saturday, January 20th, 2018 – Juk. This is what happens when we’re headed for a high of six degrees. The snow is melting fast making it hard to keep your feet dry walking down the beach.
Saturday, January 20th, 2018 – this picture was taken at 14th street looking towards the water. It shows how much sand is embedded in the snow drifts. It’s tempting to think you’re looking at the sand on the ground, but this is sand on the surface of the melthing snowdrift.
Saturday, January 20th, 2018 – this is the largest group I’ve seen on the beach all winter hiking down the beach on a warm day. I never met up with them as they were headed the opposite direction going west from beach 4.
